Vintage SHAPLEIGH HDW DE Medium double Ivory celluloid Tip bolster switchblade knife made for the hardware giant by Schrade Cutlery Co of Walden, NY sometime between 1910 and 1916 most likely. The knife measures 3 3/8" closed and just over 7 1/16 inches open with brass liners and nickel silver tip bolsters, buttons and safeties. Both blades are 99% full or better with some light scratches and light spotting. Main spear blade still has a clear blade etch on the face that reads DIAMOND EDGE with a diamond in between with the letters DE with an arrow through them. The spear blade tang is marked SHAPLEIGH HDW CO around a diamond shape with DE inside (Diamond Edge trademark) and pen blade is stamped US PATS FEB 13, 06, FEB 26, 07 & SEPT 13, 10. The Ivory celluloid scales (handles) are in excellent condition. The knife works well with blade tips below the liners closed, open fully and small blade locks up tight and large blade has less than 1/16" movement at the tip open. Barely rattles if shaken with blades open as many of the old doubles do. Both safeties work. EX+ condition.
