Antique PRESS BUTTON KNIFE CO 3 3/8" Medium double Tortoise celluloid w SAFTIES automatic knife made in Walden, NY before 1910. This is a RARE double with sliding safeties, which they experimented with before 1910 when George Schrade came out with his Schrade Safety Knife with sliding safeties. The design was not as good as George's and they dropped their version of a safety knife within a couple of years so there are not a lot of these around and very hard to find.

The knife measures 3 3/8 inches closed and 6 3/4 inches with both blades open and it has brass liners and nickel silver buttons and safeties. This is a Spear/pen blade combo and both blades have loss from sharpening/use and are both 94% full, or better with some loss from sharpening, patina, pitting and some scratches, but overall decent. Both blade tangs are stamped PRESS BUTTON KNIFE CO WALDEN, NY on the front and the backsides are blank, so this is an Early safety knife before they added the PAT APPLIED FOR stamp. The scales (handles) are tortoise celluloid and in very good condition. The knife works well with both blade tips below the liners closed, good spring with some kickback on the large blade, and excellent lockup open, big blade is a little loose so it does rattle if shaken open, as most do. Safety on the small blade does not work, which is part of the reason that they stopped making them. VG condition.
