Vintage Kabar Big Grizzly switchblade made by Union Cutlery Co of Olean, NY sometime between 1923 and early 1950s and designated the (pattern) model #2179. The knife measures 5 1/2 inches closed and 9 3/4 inches open with genuine stag scales and brass liners & pins with nickel silver bolsters & button. It weighs in at a bit over half a pound and is a definitely handful. Considered by many to be the King of the American switchblades these knives are highly sought after by collectors and are the focal point of many knife collections.
The clip blade is 94% full and shiny with light scratches and the tang is stamped KABAR on the front and PAT. over Union Cutlery Co on the back of the tang thought both are mostly hidden behind the liners & bolsters. The stag scales (handles) are in excellent condition with lots of character and no cracks. The knife functions well with blade tip slightly above the liners closed, opens fully with one hand, but takes practice and much easier to open using two hands with fair lockup with a little over 1/8" movement at the tip. Many of these end up with "tired" springs and don't open fully, but this one still has a strong spring and opens fully when the button is pressed! Here's your chance to own a legendary piece of American switchblade history! Rattles if shaken with blade open as most of these do. Overall VG condition.
