KaBar Grizzly Stag Vintage #2179 switchblade knife
KaBar Grizzly Stag Vintage #2179 switchblade knife
This is a vintage Kabar Big Grizzly switchblade made by Union Cutlery Co of Olean, NY sometime between 1923 and 1950s. It was designated the model #2179 and it measures approx 5 1/2 inches closed and 9 7/8 inches open with genuine stag scales and brass liners. It weighs in at a bit over half a pound and is a definitely handful. Considered by many to be the King of the American switchblades these knives are highly sought after by collectors and are the focal point of many knife collections.
The blade is marked KABAR that is visible. May be stamped REG US PAT OFF underneath, but if so it's hidden by the bolster. Back of the tang is stamped PAT. over Union Cutlery Co. This Grizzly has a later production profile blade that is smaller/narrower than the early FAT profile blade. They made at least three changes to the blade profile and stamps over the years. This narrower profile blade is about 94% full, or better and shiny with some light scratches. The stag scales are very attractive and in great condition with a couple of hairline cracks that won't hurt anything and most of these do have. Looks like a patch/little glue by one pin. Added pics. The knife functions well with the blade tip seating deep when closed, opens fully with average lockup when open with 1/8 inch up and down at the tip. This knife appears to have been repaired at some time because the main pin does not look factory. It has some affect on the value, but I've factored that in and the knife looks and works great! These later production Grizzlies often don't have a hole in the bottom bolster for a lanyard ring as most of the Grizzlies do. Here's your chance to own a legendary piece of American switchblade history! Overall EX- condition.
