HENRY SEARS CHICAGO 1937 22cm Italian Swivel bolster automatic knife with black scales measures 22.2cm (8.75 inches) open and 4 7/8 inches closed with brass liners and steel button & safety. Several of these knives have surfaced in the collecting world over the years and there has been much debate. Swivel bolster stilettos didn't exist until around 1960, so obviously not a knife from 1937. Also the nail nick in the blade is odd and blade "ice pick" shape is also unusual. I think someone customized a bunch of low cost stilettos in the 1990s by changing the blade shape, the stamp and adding nickel silver bolsters to the knife. The square hold in the locking tab is probably a clue to the original knives before customization. Interesting pieces of switchblade history for sure. The flat grind Ice pick blade is 98% or better with original finish, light sharpening and the ricasso is stamped HENRY SEARS CHICAGO 1937. The black synthetic scales (handles) are in excellent condition. The knife works well with blade tip deep and centered closed, nice snap and excellent lockup. The bolsters and safety are kinda loose, but work properly. No rattle if shaken with blade open. Safety works. EX condition.
