Hammer Brand Serpentine Utility Jack switchblade from the 1950s. This knife was made by the Imperial Knife Co of Providence, RI and was designated the model JM98PB. The knife measures 3.5 inches closed and 6.25 inches open with BRASS liners. The blade is marked HAMMER BRAND USA with a picture of an arm holding a hammer and the back is marked with two patent numbers ending in 37 & 82. The blade is 98% full and retains much of the original factory finish with some light scratches, light patina and a little spotting, but very nice. The handles (scales) are hollow steel with celluloid wrap in Silver pearl Red swirl with a little rust around the safety hole. These more interesting colors were used in the late 1940s, early 50s and are fun to collect. The wraps are in good condition with minimal shrinkage. The knife works GREAT with the blade tip seating deep when closed, strong snap and good lockup open with about 1/8" up and down and a little more side to side. Safety works. EX- condition.
